I’m Tim Jones. That B Corp Bloke. And I help businesses Grow Good.
But I didn’t start here. In fact, my path into this work was anything but obvious.
I spent over ten years in medical device sales. Think operating theatres, big salaries, free cars, and frequent flyer points. I thought I was living the dream. I thought I was making a difference.
Then a few cracks started to show.
I saw companies pushing products to market too fast. Products that weren’t ready. Patients died. Shareholders smiled. Surgeons were getting kickbacks to use certain devices. The spin machine kicked in. We all just moved on.
But something inside me didn’t sit right.
Then came the birth of my daughter on the back of the Christchurch earthquakes. The big Existential Wet Fish To The Face. If you’ve ever had the universe slap you in the face you’ll know what I mean. Everything changed. I started asking bigger questions. What am I really doing here? What kind of world am I helping build for my daughter? Is this all there is?
So I walked away.
I tried other industries. New job, new buzzwords. But it was just the same game in a different jersey. More “assets to be sweated.” More values on the wall that nobody lived. More of that hollow feeling in my chest.
Then I stumbled across something called B Corp. I didn’t know what it was, but something about it lit a fire in me.
I reached out to Steve Ardagh, the CEO of New Zealand’s first B Corp. A 45-minute coffee turned into two and a half hours of my mind being blown. These were businesses that actually gave a damn. Not just about profit, but people. Planet. Purpose.
Not long after that meeting, I got made redundant. My daughter was still in nappies. My wife had just started her own business. My dad had just been diagnosed with terminal cancer in the UK. So, of course, it was the perfect time to start a business…
But I knew I couldn’t go back.
Grow Good was born
Grow Good was born.
I certified as one of New Zealand’s first B Corps.
And I locked in my personal mission to co-create a world of abundance that my daughter can inherit. One where people and planet thrive together.
Since then, I’ve helped more than a third of New Zealand’s B Corps get certified.
I’ve seen what happens when good businesses step up, back their values, and prove their impact.
And that’s why I do what I do.
Because the old way of doing business is dying.
Profit at all costs is yesterday’s news.
The businesses that will thrive in the years ahead are the ones that lead with purpose, back it up with action, and create the kind of world we all want to live in.
